Day 1 October 27: Depart USA

  • Board your overnight flight from Dulles International Airport (IAD) to Accra, Ghana

Day 2 October 28: Arrive Accra

  • Arrive in Kotoka International Airport in Accra, meet your representative and transfer to your hotel to store your luggage until check-in
  • Visit the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, the burial site of Ghana’s first president
  • Spend some time at leisure for late breakfast or early lunch (on own)
  • Check-in to your hotel for some rest
  • Enjoy a festive welcome dinner with your fellow travelers

Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, Accra

Arrive early morning in Accra, the bustling capital city of Ghana. After meeting your representative and transferring to your hotel, you will store your luggage and set out on a half-day tour. 

Visit the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, the burial site of Ghana’s first president, to learn about his contribution to Ghana’s independence. Later, have some time at leisure to explore the area or have an early lunch, then transfer to your hotel for check-in.

In the evening, join your fellow travelers for a welcome dinner celebrating the traditional cuisine of Ghana along with international specialties.

Day 3 October 29: Accra

  • Board a private coach for a half-day Highlights of Accra Tour
  • Enjoy a guided walking tour in historic Jamestown
  • Explore Independence Square and its monuments dedicated to Pan-Africanism

Today immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of Accra, beginning with a walking exploration of Jamestown and Ushertown. These old colonial fishing communities date back to the 17th century, and still feature the narrow alleyways and remnants of the tunnels used during the dark era of the slave trade. Pass by the vibrant Brazil House, whose colorful façade was originally constructed by freed slaves. Conclude your walk with a traditional Ghanaian snack or cold drink before heading on to the next part of your tour.

Accra features many significant monuments celebrating Pan-Africanism and Ghana’s independence. Visit Independence Square, the Black Star Arc and other sites as your guide takes you through these moments in history.

Later today, enjoy strolling in the arts & crafts market and the Makola Market, the city’s largest open-air market. At this bustling site, you’ll experience the energy and artistry of West African vendors selling a little bit of everything and you will have the opportunity to buy a colorful traditional Ghanian outfit.

Day 4 October 30: Accra - Atimpoku

  • Depart Accra towards Atimpoku, a small town on the west bank of the Volta River
  • Relax and breathe in the beautiful views on a short Volta River Cruise
  • Optional Excursion: Naming ceremony at the village of Atsiekpoe ($120.00 per person)

Leave Accra behind this morning as you depart for the town of Atimpoku, a small village at the gateway to the Volta River region. Relax during a boat cruise along the river as the gentle flow of the water guides you on a peaceful journey. Along the way, see lush green trees lining the riverbanks, creating a beautiful scene under the blue sky.

Enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure in your deluxe hotel or join an exciting optional excursion to the village of Atsiekpoe.

Visit the picturesque village of Atsiekpoe (the name means "Home of the Cashew Tree") situated on the green banks of the Volta River. Take a village walk with the locals and experience the day to day life activities of the villagers. Later, be adorned with Ghanian cloth or beads as you prepare to be given your African name in a special ceremony preformed by the village elder.

Day 5 October 31: Atimpoku - Kumasi

  • Learn the art of beadmaking from recycled glass at Cedi Beads
  • Travel via private coach to Kumasi Cultural Center
  • Visit Manhyia Palace, the official residence of the monarch of the Ashanti Kingdom

Making Cedi Beads

This morning, learn about bead-making at Cedi Beads, where the local Krobo people are known for crafting hand-made beads from recycled glass, which are then worn during traditional ceremonies and celebrations.

Following this factory visit, travel on to Kumasi, the royal capital of the Ashanti Kingdom for over three centuries, and today a hectic and vibrant city in the Ghanaian heartland. Begin your tour at the Kumasi Cultural Center, a compound featuring craft makers, artwork, and artifacts of Ashanti history.

Next up, visit the Manhyia Palace, built in 1926 and home to both the private residence of the current King of Asante, as well as a public museum where you’ll take a guided tour.

Day 6 November 1: Kumasi

  • Visit Ashanti Craft Villages of Ahwiaa, Ntonso, and Adawomanse
  • Peruse the Kejetia Market, the largest in West Africa
  • Spend the rest of the day at your leisure

Today you have a chance to visit multiple craft villages in the Ashanti region, each specializing in distinctive adinkra symbols, which are used in artwork and pottery, and even have the opportunity to create your own!

Marvel at the vibrant Kente cloths produced in the village of Adanwomase, and explore the Kejetia Market, the largest open market in West Africa, where you can find a colorful array of food, textiles, household goods and more.

The rest of the day in Kumasi is yours to enjoy at leisure.

Day 7 November 2: Kumasi - Cape Coast

  • Travel to Cape Coast along the Assin Manso Slave Route
  • Visit Memorial Park and the Ancestral Graveyard
  • Continue to Elmina for a walking tour
  • Visit Elmina Castle, the oldest European building south of the Sahara

Depart Kumasi this morning for an emotional day, traveling along the infamous Slave Route towards cape Coast. Visit Assin Manso, once an important stop in the slave trail, where the captives had their last bath in African Waters before presented and sold at the salve market. Stop for a visit to the Memorial Park and Ancestral Graveyard before continuing to the fishing port of Elmina. Here, take a walking tour to learn about the history of the town and its archaeological sites.

Later, embark on a solemn visit to the historic Elmina Castle, built in the late 15th century initially as an outpost for gold and ivory trade, and later used for the trading of slaves.

Day 8 November 3: Cape Coast

  • Enjoy a relaxing day on the beach or by the pool
  • Optional excursion: Canopy Walk at Kakum National Park ($15.00 per person)
  • Gather for a drumming and dance performance to accompany your farewell dinner

Kakum National Park

Visit Kakum National Park, a tropical forest with an immense diversity of animals and plants, a home to endangered species of monkeys and antelopes and a very important birding area. In your visit, enjoy the adventures canopy walk - seven treetops connected by a 1000 feet long suspended walkway, 130 feet above the ground.

Day 9 November 4: Cape Coast/Depart Accra

  • Visit Cape Coast Castle and Museum, the original center for trading in the region
  • Travel to Accra and enjoy final souvenir shopping
  • Board return flight from Accra to New York

In the morning, visit Cape Coast Castle, another significant slave trading post later converted into an educational museum. The guided tour through the castle and its dungeons is a heart wrenching glimpse at the cruel circumstances in which enslaved people were kept before their forced departure from Africa.

Travel back to Accra for your flight back home. En-route stop for lunch and upon arrival have the opportunity to shop for some last-minute souvenirs before heading to the airport. Bid farewell to Ghana as you board your flight home.
