Day 3 Golden Circle

Visit a geothermal greenhouse

Learn about Iceland's most important geothermal energy use when visiting a geothermal greenhouse. Next, enjoy an up-close look at Icelandic horses. These unique, easy-going animals are ancestors of the first Viking horses and are well known for their convenient pony size, muscular build, and fifth gait (way of walking), whereas most horses only have 3-4 gaits.

Continue to Gullfoss waterfalls, located in the canyon along the Hvítá River. Gullfoss means "Golden Falls," which comes from the golden hue often shining in its glacial waters. Later, explore Strokkur Geysir, known as "the churn," a fountain-type geyser that spouts up to 66 ft every five to ten minutes.

Next, head to a UNESCO World Heritage Site at Þingvellir National Park, where the ancient Vikings had a parliament, making it one of the oldest parliaments in the world. Equally as intriguing, the Þingvellir plain sits on a tectonic plate boundary where North America and Europe are slowly tearing away from each other. As a result, the plain is scarred by dramatic fissures, ponds, and rivers, including the great rift Almannagjá.

Arrive in Borgarnes later today and check into the hotel.

Day 4 Snæfellsnes Peninsula & West Fjords

This morning, travel along Iceland's west coast to Snæfellsnes Peninsula, known for its beautiful and dramatic landscapes with lava fields, volcanoes, glaciers, black and white beaches, and dramatic coastal cliffs. A rugged mountain chain runs its length, capped by the 4700 ft Snæfellsjökull glacier, a mystical cone-shaped stratovolcano. Explore Snæfellsnes National Park and its mysterious Snæfellsjökull glacier, and then follow the adventure of Jules Verne's classic science-fiction novel, "The Journey to the Center of the Earth." This once-in-a-lifetime lava cave tour takes you over 114 ft underground and about 656 ft into the lava tube called Vatnshellir.

Later, catch the Baldur ferry from Stykkishólmur to Brjánslækur in the West Fjords. On the 2.5-hour journey over Breiðafjörður Bay, pass the island of Flatey, inhabited only during the summertime. On a clear day, enjoy a magnificent view of the bay's countless isles and the glacier Snæfellsjökull.

Day 5 Iceland's Westernmost Point

Full Day Itinerary

After breakfast, start the day with a drive up the coastline and stop at Hnjótur Folk Museum to learn about fishing, farming, and everyday life in the area. Continue to the seabird cliffs of Látrabjarg, the westernmost point of Iceland and Europe, known for its density of Nordic birds, including the most sought-after puffin, which can be seen from mid-May till mid-August. You may also see razorbills, guillemots, fulmars, cormorants, kittiwakes, and other cliff birds in large flocks up close.

Weather permitting, travel to the red sand beach of Rauðisandur and take in the magnificent hues of the sand that differ with daylight, tides, and weather. This pure sand beach is home to countless seabirds and seals.

Day 6 Beautiful West Fjords

Admire the seven-level picturesque Dynjandi waterfall
Tour the fjords, mountains, valleys and wide open spaces of the Icelandic landscape

Full Day Itinerary

After breakfast, travel over mountains and along the shores of scenic fjords to the majestic Arnarfjörður fjord. At the bottom of the fjord, take in the picturesque Dynjandi waterfall, which has seven levels of plunging water and is considered the most beautiful waterfall by the Icelandic people.

Continue over a mountain pass along the West Fjords' southern, less traveled shores, characterized by sheer cliffs, deep-cut bays, and narrow stretches of coastal lowland. Visit Erpsstaðir, a family-run dairy farm best known for its ice cream and other dairy products. Take a look at the milk production world and taste their unique ice cream directly from the farm, with local seasonal flavors.

After a day dominated by mountains, lakes, valleys, sea, and wide-open spaces, continue to Hvammstangi and check into your hotel.

Day 7 Heading North

Today's journey follows a little off-the-beaten path around the Vatnsnes peninsula. Pass through the fishing village of Hvammstangi, also called the seal capital of Iceland. A gravel road takes us around the peninsula to Hvítserkur, a highlight on the region's east coast; a mass of igneous rock, about 50 ft high, situated on the seashore and home to fulmars and gulls. Legend has it that Hvítserkur is a petrified troll who intended to stone a nearby cloister, but dawn arrived before he could succeed.

Continue to Kolugljúfur Canyon, where waterfalls cascade into the deep, rugged gorge. It is breathtaking to walk on the viewing platform and watch the river's calm waters suddenly leap and tumble onwards over so many impressive falls—a sight that will leave no one unmoved.

Further north, stop at Víðimýri to visit one of Iceland's few preserved turf churches. The church was built in 1834 with turf walls but timber gables both back and front.

Continue along a high mountain road to Akureyri, also called the capital of North Iceland.

Day 8 Siglufjörður & Eyjafjörður

Enjoy breakfast in the beautiful botanical garden at Akureyri.

Today, see spectacular fjord landscapes while traveling to Siglufjörður, Iceland’s northernmost town, known as the herring capital of the North Atlantic, located on the mountainous Tröllaskagi Peninsula. On the way, pass small fishing villages and stop at a deserted valley that even most Icelanders have not seen.

Visit the Herring Era Museum in Siglufjörður, Iceland’s largest maritime museum.

Later, enjoy a whale-watching experience in Eyjafjörður – Iceland’s longest fjord right below the Arctic Circle.

Day 9 Geological Wonders and Nature Baths

Visit Goðafoss, the waterfall of the Gods

Today, explore Goðafoss, the waterfall of the Gods, followed by a visit to Lake Mývatn, known for its abundant bird life and amazing volcanic lava landscapes. See pseudo craters and the tephra cone Hverfjall, walk in the mysterious lava field of Dimmuborgir, and explore the hot springs, fumaroles, and bubbling mud pools of Námaskarð.

Travel to Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall, in the northern part of Vatnajökull National Park. Then, continue through the uninhabited highlands to East Iceland. Explore the northernmost fjord on the East Fjord mountain range before ending the day with a dip at Vök baths, the floating geothermal pools nestled between the scenic surroundings of the Urriðavatn lake.

Later, check into your hotel in Borgarfjörður Eystri.

This morning, admire the dramatic fjord landscape and its tiny fishing villages at the end of twisty roads in the East Fjords. First, stop to visit Petra’s fascinating rock collection. Since she was a little girl, Petra has been an avid naturalist and rock collector. She has collected this unique treasure of rocks, crystals, zeolites, quartz, and more for nearly 80 years, all from the nearby area in the Eastfjords.

In the afternoon, witness Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier that is visible all over Southeast Iceland.

Today, visit Vatnajökull National Park, which covers about 14% of Iceland, making it Europe’s second-largest national park in terms of area after Yugyd Va in Russia.

Near the town of Höfn, enjoy a boat ride amongst the floating icebergs on the magnificent Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon.

Later, discover the black sands of the so-called Diamond beach.

Explore the region of Skaftafell, which is nestled below Iceland’s highest mountain and the second biggest stratovolcano in Europe, the almost 7000 ft. tall Hvannadalshnjúkur. Walk close to one of the many glacial tongues in the area - a beautiful place to take photographs.

Day 12 The South Coast

Today, travel along the South Coast of Iceland, between the sea, rugged mountains, glaciers, and waterfalls. Explore the black lava beach, Reynisfjara, and bird cliffs before stopping at the Skógafoss waterfall, another must-see location in South Iceland. The crashing water creates a mist that results in frequent and magical rainbows, adding more memorable experiences to the sheer beauty of this stunning scenery and place. Afterward, visit the Skógar folk museum, which has its turf houses and assemblage of traditions of territorial relics on display.

Then, get a fantastic close-up view of the Seljalandsfoss waterfall's dazzling display of power. Walk along a trail that leads behind the falls for a unique behind-the-scenes view.

Continue to the Lava Center in Hvolsvöllur and enjoy an exhibition documentary about volcanic eruptions in Iceland over the past few years. Then, return to Reykjavik.
