Switzerland
Jagged, snow-capped Alps form the backdrop for glacier trekking or shopping in ritzy St. Moritz. The world’s oldest democracy is delightfully clean, safe, and healthy. On-time trains carry Swiss toting bicycles and trekking poles. A melting pot with four official languages, it holds Europe’s highest coffee roastery and the loneliest train station on the “Heidi Express.”

Overview | Capital: Bern |
Entry requirements | Please see our Entry Requirements page. |
Staying Healthy | There are no health requirements to enter Switzerland. |
Weather | Spring, summer and autumn are all very fair in Switzerland despite snow on its highest peaks year-round. June and July are when the alpine wildflowers bloom; they are also the peak season for tourists. Take a sweater no matter when you travel, and an umbrella. |
Tipping | A 15% service charge is included in the price of all services and on your hotel bill. Round up taxi and restaurant bills if the service has been good. |
Money & Credit Cards | The Swiss franc is the only currency accepted everywhere. Note that the Euro is a foreign currency in Switzerland, so accepting it results in extra costs and risks for shop owners. Therefore, if you pay with Euros, change will be in Swiss francs and the exchange rate is mostly not in your favor. Always notify your bank prior to departure to avoid any problems using your credit or debit card while traveling. |
Shopping | When shopping in Switzerland, look for watches, crystal, embroidered items, clocks, pottery, Swiss army knives, lace, cowbells, antiques, cutlery, ski clothing and equipment, shoes, chocolate, cheese, and liquors. |
Electricity & Power Adapters | 230 volts. Plug J. You will need a voltage converter and plug adapter in order to use U.S. appliances. We recommend getting a universal adapter and converter kit. Learn more about electrical standards around the world. |
Cell Phones & Internet | Want to take your cell phone, tablet or laptop, but not sure how to get cell service or wifi? Read up on using your cell phone abroad and the top 5 ways to get Internet abroad. |
